Portfolio

I have a large portfolio of work spanning the last 11 years, however not all of it is entirely relevant, accessible to the public, or live. Here’s a selection of projects that I’ve worked. If you’d like to see more of my work, have a look here, or get in touch.

Transformers 2 – Starscream Showdown – Paramount

Transformers 2

A game to promote the theatrical release of Transformers 2. You play the part of Starscream, who can transform from robot to plane. At the end of the level you get to battle Optimus Prime.

Of interest are the bitmap blitting engine and pixel-level collision detection.

ActionScript 3, PHP, MySQL.

Shopper 13
Shopper 13

This game is installed at the Science Museum as part of the Wallace and Gromit Cracking Contraptions exhibition.

I wrote a little about it here, and it was also shown on BBC News 24.

ActionScript 3, some hardware hacking with the arcade controller.

Watchmen Arcade – Paramount
Watchmen Arcade

A 3 level side-scrolling beat-em-up to promote the theatrical release of Watchmen. It had some really pleasing write-ups, including one on Ain’t It Cool News. Lots of fun to make, and I’d love to take this type of game further one day.

ActionScript 3, PHP, MySQL.

Vikings!
Vikings

A promotional game with Vikings! Again, a slight modification of an existing engine.
Link TBC.

ActionScript 3, PHP, MySQL.

Madagascar 2 – Paramount

A promotional game for the Madagascar 2 film.
Link TBC.

ActionScript 3, Papervision, PHP, MySQL.

Merlin – BBC

Two games in one. I coded the wall-climbing vertically scrolling game, which used a slightly modified version of the game engine used in Tropic Thunder.
Quest for the Mortaeus

ActionScript 3.

Tropic Thunder – Paramount

An arcade-style vertically scrolling shooter. A lot of fun to make. In a future use of this engine I’ll add a node-based pathfinding AI.

ActionScript 3.

Littleloud Website

The littleloud.com website was rebuilt during re-branding.

PHP, CSS, MySQL, XHTML.

Kung Fu Panda – Paramount

A promotional game for Paramount Pictures release Kung Fu Panda.

Of interest is the use of a frame-independent bitmap rendering technique to make sure the arrows move in time with the beats regardless of the frame rate of the movie.

ActionScript 3. Google Spreadsheet was used to create a CMS for the beats.

Bow Street Runner – Channel 4

An interactive drama for Channel 4, which was well received throughout the blogosphere.

A favourite moment of mine was finding a screenshot of myself lying dead on the front page of BoingBoing.net and Kotaku.com!

There are 5 episodes, each consisting of 5 scenes. Each scene can contain multiple views, minigames, conversations with characters, and items to collect and study.

If you were to thoroughly play the entire game, it would easily take you over an hour. Pretty impressive for a free Flash game!

I had the role of Lead Technical on this project.

Winner of a Flashforward award in 2008.

Winner of a BAFTA - EA British Academy Children’s Awards 2008.

Winner of a BIMA.

ActionScript 3, JSON, Python, and Google Spreadsheet for the CMS.

Shooter – Paramount

A promotional game for Shooter.

Of interest is the use of bitmap blitting and DisplacementMapFilter to distort the view around the edge of the scope.

ActionScript 2.

Oban – Jetix

A game for Jetix to support the release of Oban Star Racers throughout Europe.

At its peak, this game received millions of hits per day. A load-balanced solution was deployed to cope with demand.

I had the role of Lead Technical on this project.

Nominated for a Flashforward award in 2007.

ActionScript 2. AMFPHP, IIS, PHP and MySQL.

7 Noble Kinsmen – (BBC)

An interactive drama to support the Shakespeare season on BBC. Released in episodes over several weeks.
